Reading Inbetween The Lines

Since completing my English Literature degree in 2009, I’ve not read a fiction book. Shock! Horror! When you’re tasked with reading 3 -4 novels a week – secondary material notwithstanding – it quickly becomes a chore. Having to drag yourself through a 300 page novel in 3 days is painful to say the least. When you consider the fact that the majority of literature, no matter how much praise is laid upon it, is subjective – it’s hard putting up with people telling you what to read, and subsequently being told to analyse.
If there’s one resolution for 2011 that I want to succeed at, it’s to rediscover my love of literature. We’re not talking fluff that doesn’t add to my intellect - I’ve got video games for mindless escapism. I’m keen to try books that challenge my thinking, that provide me with recountable knowledge and all in all, enthral me. Having finished this, I’ve felt like I’ve made the first step. Next up is the complete works of my favourite author, Don DeLillo. In the past I’ve read, Falling Man, Underworld, Cosmopolis and I’m keen to continue, firstly with the copies of Omega Man Point Omega and Running Dog on my shelf.
Thus, with clever signposting that’s only possible by a good writer, I’d like to talk about the delightful Daniel Lipscombe who’s launched a new website all about books and the world that surrounds them. At the moment Libri Populus is still in its green roots stage, begging to flower into something wonderfully literary, but be sure to bookmark, RSS and follow it as it (hopefully) maintains its momentum.
