Day 9 – Small Japanese Women

Retrospectively Written 4th May, Kyoto Station – Yesterday I went around Kyoto’s Western mountains with Etsuko and her sister – they’re two lovely women who I know through many connections.

They’re both living in Kobe but were nice enough to come to Kyoto for the day to show me around. We went to two temples and a shrine and they explained a lot about the culture and religion.

We had tofu for lunch at a lovely restaurant where you got to make it yourself at the table. It was accompanied by an assortment of tempura vegtables (including lotus flower), rice with bamboo shoots, some fish, and other bits and bobs. It also came with a Japanese desert which was peculiar – it was some sort of jello bean cube covered in powder.

It was a lovely day and I’m eternally grateful for the hospitality and generosity shown. Hopefully one day I’ll return, visit Kobe and return the favour.

In the evening I hung out in the bar and went for ice-cream, had a couple drinks and said goodbye to Anna and Rachel.

All in all, a great end to a lovely part of my trip. I shall return to Kyoto one day, you can be sure of it.
